I really like Afrikaans ... it has a certain charm to it ... always hated it when a lecture, e.g. about constitutional law, in Afrikaans was switched to English. I'd even say that deep conversation is easier than an everyday conversation:
On the one hand I've juxtaposed a decent amount of legal texts ... some were written in Afrikaans & some in Dutch ... although legalese can be difficult in your native language ... without having to learn Afrikaans the texts were easier to understand/compare than the German, French, English, ... all the texts that were written in other languages (which required prior training). On the other hand when you try to have a normal conversation in person ... the one party using Afrikaans & the other Dutch ... I found that switching to English is a lot easier.
