This thread is for the historical fiction game being played, where each player has the opportunity to recount the tales and trials of their turn through a fictional account. It may be in any time period and even change time periods from turn to turn.

This is the current game.
http://www.majorcommand.com/Games/Game.php?gameid=194964

There are a few rules.

1. All players must have the same agreed upon colors. This will be useful for posting of screenshots if desired. Colors will be agreed upon once the game begins.

2. Only feel free to post an account if the situation moves you, and do not feel obligated to do so each turn. Sometimes it may help to post a screenshot of the map, or dice screen.

3. All accounts must start with this line to denote that it is actually an account, and not a regular comment. Use the
Code:
button or tags. Your account should follow. See below example.

[CODE]begin

Dear mum, I have just pillaged the mongolians for the third time, and boy are my arms tired.....

4. Anyone may comment in this thread or discuss accounts.

5. The starting scenario is one of a tentative peace among scattered peoples who have not yet unified under a banner... but decades of tensions have created a powder keg atmosphere and most know that war is coming and they better find and follow a leader of great power... or be subjugated by one.

This just in, Australian Freedom Fighters, under the supervision of the US PACIFIC FLEET COMMANDER, successfully launched the first attack on the region with the intention of unifying the South Pacific.

Fighter Command has already claimed victory over aboriginal natives with the reunification of New Zealand after a day of heavy bombing raids.

According to UN monitors, 4 enemy infantry divisions were destroyed by fighter planes. while 2 naval battle groups were successfully hit by submarines.

Allied casualties were very light - with only 1 aircraft lost.

The second looks better to me - I don't much like having to scroll the box left to right to read the message

The French see trouble brewing in their old hunting grounds of West Africa. Seizing the initiative, they establish a strong base for themselves in Mali. Their firm commitment to "boots on the ground" ensures al Qaeda operatives are unable to gain a foothold in the region.

Suffering only light losses, the French rapidly take over Gold Coast and Mauritania. Further French troops on exercises in South America are recalled to West Africa, as reinforcements for their occupied territories. With French troops already stationed in friendly Morocco, this leaves only Algeria and Ghana in the whole Maghreb region still in the hands of the renegade militias.

Meanwhile American and British digital intercepts of French diplomatic correspondence have uncovered a proposal from China to help pay for France's African sorties, in return for Chinese access to the Maghreb's untapped mineral resources.

NEWS FROM THE FRONT:

The Red Horde in Caucasia, emboldened by the additional deployment of 5 divisions, invaded the Ural Mountain region to the north and east. They encountered stiff opposition, losing 4 of the divisions of newcomers due to the hostile terrain. Their plan to overrun the entire region was further thwarted by stiff opposition in Murmansk, who beat back the divisions from Finland with heavy losses.

Caucasia received reinforcements from the north, virtually assuring further bloodshed in Western Russia.

Letter from Captain Igor Kolmogorova to the RCA Institution*

General Slobodin:

I´m writing this letter from the finnish part of the Lappland. It is a large story to tell how i ended up here with all my soldiers, and I am afraid it will cost me my place in this army, but i think you deserve an explanation on what happened the last days:

A week ago we were mantaining our position in the murmansk port and trying to convince the Sami people to join our cause, as we were ordered. The northern Samis are a very closed group and was very dfficult to get access to them, but after we made contact to them it wasn´t difficult to convince them to fight with us. That guy you sent to join us, Kolevatov, helped a lot with it, as he knew how to spoke Sami and apparently the tribe leader made empathy with him right after they met.

Until here our missions were perfectly fullfilled, but two days later we recieved attacks from tiny groups of men that came from the south part of the frontier with finland (Now we know they were part of the red army), fortunately we did not had any casualtie, the Sami people knew perfectly how to move in the territory and the invaders couldn´t stand the cold climate from this lands. We thought we were safe in this lands with this incredible people, but two days ago the Sami people from the southern Russian Lappland came to our campament, escaping from their homelands due to a bloody attack of an army that we now know it was the red horde. The people were terrified, they kept telling us how the red horde army were inhumanely blood thirsty and the horrible things they did with the people they conquered. A man who scaped from a little village near the urals that got decimated, told us how after the pacific people in the village surrender to the invaders, the red men kept prisioners all the adults in the village and took out all the children, after that they started eating them in front of their parents eyes, alive! And this is not the worst I heard about those men.

The Sami people insisted that we need to escape fro the "red demons" and treated us with breaking our commitment if we stayed in Russia, after thinking a lot I decided that the help and lives of this people were more important than the territory under our feet and we escaped to finland, to reach finland the Samis made another great demostration of their power and we were able to kill all the reds in there without any injury, not just death but nobody had any injury, that was unbelievable.

We are camping now in the frigid Lappland, hoping that the political border protect us from the army that is taking Russia right now, prepared to recieve new orders.

Captain Igor Kolmogorova

*Letter translated from the original russian for the better comprehension and analysis of the british boureau.
The letter was sent briefly after the series of incidents of xx/xx/xxxx. Its worth saying that apprently the captain didn´t knew the institution he was working for, since he refer to the transmissor as General Slobodin.

What a great idea to write real time reports of battle.

Very enjoyable reading guys n gals. It is just like reading a real letter from another era. One can only imagine that the context will get more desperate and exciting as time goes on for many of you.

Unfortunately when viewing the game, the colours do not match up to the territotys that are told in the story`s. For e.g Robin = RED, Trail = Blue...Cards = Yellow. In chat it sounds like you had all changed your colours......Unless i am missing something, a viewer can`t change colours so it makes it a bit harder to follow.

Apart from that, it is really good reading material

DBC broadcast under headline: Civilisation is threatened

A series of unprovocated attacks across the world is threatening civilisation and our way of life. Enemy forces have so far seized New Zealand, Urals and Tanzania without any prior provocation or declaration of war. Any hope for a peaceful diplomatic solution seems futile as one of the barbarian aggresors even followed upp her attack by offering nothing more than more bloodshed for the peoples of Fiji, Borneo and Thailand. Our forces have now fled Borneo for more favorable defensive positions in Vietnam in an effort to save the region from the evil reign of terror. But rest assure: We will never give up! We will never surrender! We will not dispair-we will prevail!

French consolidate West African positions

With both Ghana and Algeria brought under submission, the French Legionnaires now have the entire Maghreb region under their control. President Hollande flies in to congratulate his troops under the banner "Mission Accomplie". It is a fresh start in a new year for this normally troubled region. Over much of the world, it is hoped the President's optimistic statement will prove true and peace will finally reign on Africa's bloodied soil.

Meanwhile, it has now been confirmed by the Chinese Department of Foreign Affairs that in the same spirit of peace and goodwill, their government has offered to build some new transport routes for the Maghreb region. There is a particular emphasis in their proposals on roads that link coastal ports with towns close to mining districts ... "in order to better help the local economies".

Comrade General,

The red armies have successfully freed Western Russia, driving out the yellow and white-coated invaders, who had left behind only a token force in Murmansk after their brutal invasion and occupation of Finland. Our losses were high, but we prevailed. We keep hearing stories of the "bloodthirsty red horde" from those left behind, which insults us greatly, considering that those invaders slaughtered the women and children who were left behind in Finland after the white-coated invaders had killed our Finnish Red Army brethren who attempted to free Murmansk previously. News comes to us that these white-coated barbarians are celebrating their "victory" in Finland, which leaves us greatly aggrieved as their victory consisted of slaughtering the defenseless, peace-loving, indigent peoples of Finland. They DARE to label us cannibals and demons after killing innocents! We are not strong on our borders, but barring an unprovoked attack by the barbarians who hide behind the white of their coats, the first step has been taken in reuniting Mother Russia.

We now await further orders from the capital.

Aussie-at-Arms

The war had been going for some time now, and she had been pouring tea since last fall in a big Aussie-Anglo hospital just outside Victoria, when one day on her way to her ward, she heard one of the doctors, Cardinal, say to a red faced gentleman wearing an Australian Fidora, "But I believe that the pretty Robinette writes. If you really want a American contributor, why not ask her?" The next moment the gentleman had been introduced as Rimbaud, and, beaming anxiously at her through his spectacles, was urging her to contribute a rattling war story to "Aussies-at-Arms" a new publication thought up by Cagey designed to bring joy to the wounded and disabled in Australian and South Pacific hospitals.

"A good rousing story, Robinette; a dash of emotion of course, but nothing to depress or discourage. You know what I mean, don't you? A tragedy with a happy ending -- that's the idea. We will be publishing our first issue in January, so you'll have to work fast. You've been at the front, haven't you? As far as the western edge of Papua? That's capital! Give us a good stirring jungle story, perhaps a hero scene involving Dreadnought to close with... Yes -- that's the very thing; and I'll try to get the marching band to play for the wounded coming back to Badorties open arms. But I leave it to you to know just what hits the army ranks best."

It was lucky that Robinette's leave was due about that time, for, despite being devoted to her patients, the tea she poured for them would have suffered from the mental distractions of her new task.

And was it any wonder that she took it so seriously? Afterall, it was Rimbaud, under the direction of the Queen Mum, that had asked her to write a war story for the first issue of "Aussies-at-Arms," to which officers from Lieutenants to Generals were to contribute poetry and photographs and patriotic sentiment into Ad nauseam!

She was dizzy with triumph, and went off to begin her work in a quiet corner of Fiji, where she was able to recruit a young and cheerful governess, one who could not only took care of the domestic needs, but more importantly had promised to defend at all costs the sacred times for her writing -- for Robinette had learned that the morning hours of great authors were "sacred" indeed.

She shut herself up in her room, laid out 4 different colored pens, gathered all the paper into one place, and burned all of the pink paper in the fireplace. Now she could began to think.

The process was less exhilarating than she had expected. She knew so much about Major Command warfare that she hardly knew where to begin; with ideas and experiences bouncing in and out of her head, and yet yielding nothing but empty paper.

And it got worse as the more she thought of the matter, the less she seemed to understand how a war story -- or any story at all, for that matter -- was written. Why did stories ever begin, and why did they ever leave off? Interestingly life doesn't do that, no... life just goes on and on...

Knowing there was a deadline to meet, this unforeseen problem began to trouble her tremendously, and so the next morning she slipped out for a walk on the beach to try to discover her needed inspiration. She knew that "Inspirations" could be fussy, fleeting, and elusive when you needed them the most, and she felt as if she was dragging along in an unbearable flat rate game.

She wandered along the cliff's edge until she came to an empty bench, where she sat down and gazed at the sea. And that is when she noticed it, at the other end of the bench, a wind battered magazine -- the spring issue of "Dice Wars" of "Fact and Fiction." Robinette pounced upon it.

Before opening it she recalled the words of the infamous story writer who had always said one must guard one's originality, avoid plagiarizing, and so forth; he had been particularly strong on that theme. But her story had to be written, and she didn't know how to begin it; so she decided it wouldn't hurt anybody to just glance at a few of the beginnings.

The first tale in the magazine was signed by one of the most prolific names in the MC history. AAFitz's opening sentence ran: "Individual Plea #549: Make no mistake, I will absolutely defend myself against any and all personal attacks, but I do hope, after this heartfelt and obviously honest plea to stop the silliness, that will never be necessary again in the future...." and Robinette turned the page impatiently. She may not have known much about story-writing, but she did know that that kind of a beginning was played out. She turned to the next.

"'People like you make me sick!!!" roared ilove, tightening her fists, sneering angrily at AAFitz" .... No, Definitely NOT; all that talk of anger, that too was getting old... she turned the page quickly without even looking to see the length of the back and forth counter arguments.

"They sat there and stared at it in silence. Neither spoke; but Ghost's heart ticked like a watch..." That was much better; but best of all she liked the next spread: "Obotron leaned across the flowers. KungFuDuet had always known that this was coming..." Robinette could imagine tying a story on to that. But she had promised to write a WAR story, not a love story; and in a war story if you have flowers they must be at the end, and never at the beginning.

Robinette pondered these thoughts while walking barefoot in the Fijian sand, and determined that at any rate, there was one clear conclusion to be drawn from this review of opening paragraphs; and that was that you must begin your story in the middle, and take for granted that your reader already knew what you were talking about.

...many years later...

"...Aye, I was there, lad, I was there at the fall of Komi. In some ways it's like I'm still there - maybe I left a piece of myself behind there, or perhaps I carried some of the battlefield away with me... I don't know, maybe the philosophers can tell you, all this old soldier knows is those mornings when I wake and I'm blind to the cold grey dawn but still see the red horde charging at us through the trees.
Ah we fought, boy, how we fought - there were heroes to the left of me and heroes to the right - Me? No, lad: the heroes are all buried beneath the trees - We fell on them from the branches, ambushed them as they followed the forest trails, our battle-bred reindeer cavalry tore into their flanks, their antlers dripping as red as the coats of the devils. We decimated them, killing two for everyone of us that fell, aye, they paid the price sure enough, they paid the price.
What went wrong? Well they just kept coming lad, flooding through the forest like a tide of blood, we may have killed two to one, but they outnumbered us by three to one and their evil commander just kept throwing his troops onto our antler-tips until they were blunted and broken - and when all our heroes had fed the forest floor with their life's-blood the rest of the red horde marched on over their corpses, their blind obedience, stupidity and sheer numbers were too much to hold back. Brave? No, lad: they were just more scared of their masters than they were of us, or maybe living under the rule of the Red tyrant is so soul-destroying that the death we offered them seemed like a welcome release...
How did I survive? Well, that's another story and this remembering is thirsty work - maybe if I had another cup of airag..."

Minor alterations of letter from Sgt Tommie Gun. Bold parts approved by HQ

Dear Mom,

After days of waiting our reinforcements finally arrived. I should have known things where gonna go bad, the reqruits where loud, stupid and not nearly enough in numbers, most of them right out of the academy with no idea of what war is like. Not that our commanders are any more capable. HQ told us we had enemy positions surrounded in Sakha. Right from the start of our attac things went terribly wrong. Our enemy had dug in hard and our lads got stuck in the barb wire and cut down by enemy machinegun fire. I was lucky to make it back to our trench alive, most did not fare as well. I doubt any of us will be home any time soon.

Love Tommie

An Ode in Pursuit of a Meaning

Oh Wilkes, where hast thou been?
Queen Maud doth say once more
Were you not cavorting with Victoria?

Nay, Sir Graham, 'twas not I.
For out of Africa I came.
I made my peace in Paraiba.

And verily, my Norwegian men are strong.
They shall surely stand by Maud,
Old gherkin that she is.

As for the landlost gurkhas in their burkas,
Methinks they have crossed a wrong suit!
No more perchance shall this world see again their likes.

communique from the front
Comrade General,

As per your orders, the liberation of Eastern Europe has begun. We freed our brethren in Ukraine from the yoke of the blue-coated oppressors with no losses, and marched into Poland victorious. One garrison has been sent to Murmansk to guard against the white-coated demons who continue to subjugate our allies in Finland. We fear an attack from them, but felt we could not afford more than the one division. We now face the evil yellow-helmeted barbarians to both the south and the east, as well as more of the blue-coats. I fear if we wish to liberate those lands it will cost us dear in blood. We will hold our positions and await further orders. The troops clamor to free the motherland to the east, but I fear we have not the strength to mount an attack. The weather is brutal, so I would counsel that we wait until the springtime to attempt to free Siberia from the oppressors of our peace-loving brethren.

As always, we will hold our ground while we await your orders.
Comrade Cardinal
