What is victory/defeat per player in a team game?

I'm in a doubles game that my team will probably win. However, my troops are defeated. Does that count as a victory or as a defeat? I'd say it is a victory ("I took one for the team") but it shows up as Defeated. How come? So does the victory only count if you are still alive when it is won?
