Can we just kill that spinning load animation? it reached the level of annoying by the second time it loaded.

Pretty sure those types of animations faded out around 1997ish.

I do like it, but it does force you to wait until it cycles through. Maybe add it to the banner or footer rather than an overlay? Something where it can still exist but not slow down game play?

It does seem to force you to have to wait. Those fast speeds we recently got are negated by the animation. If the “next game” icon was back and you wouldn’t have to go back to the Games tab to find your next turn, would avoid having to watch the animation so many times.

Yikes. I'll happily pay extra to have this feature removed.

Sorry guys/gals, but I have to stop this conversation before it "spins" out of control. (yes, pun intended)

The following is a quote regarding "page loaders". It is a part of standard webpage design (yes, in 2023):

An animated page loader is a visual element created using CSS and JavaScript. It doesn't impact loading speeds because it operates within the client's browser separate from the actual transfer of webpage data. CSS and JavaScript are client-side technologies, while data transfer occurs between the host server and the client's modem. This distinction ensures that the page loader's animation doesn't interfere with the loading process of the webpage's content.
Animated page loaders are simple cosmetic features that are universally used on webpages for several reasons. Firstly, they provide visual feedback to users, reassuring them that the website is actively working to load the content. They also reduce perceived waiting times which enhances user satisfaction. Additionally, loaders are used as a design element adding to the overall aesthetic of a website, which can be used to reinforce branding and content awareness.
Overall, they're an essential UX component that improves user experience without compromising performance.

Animated page loaders are not going anywhere, but you are certainly free to find an example of one that might be more visually pleasing.

Below are hundreds of examples to choose from. Just make sure it fits into the "theme" of the game!

I'd be happy with a simple progress bar, or a little spinny wheel, or something, you know, subtle... the tacky graphics on this current one feel like opening up a happy birthday e-card when those were a thing twenty some odd years ago.

completely agree - in my other world, I'm a webbie and UX guy. When users notice a page loader it's either the page that's loading is 'heavy' or the loader itself is distracting. In this case it's both. You have a graphically rich game page (heavy) and a visually distracting loader.

UX teaches us one basic premise, users learn 99.99% from other sites. In other words if you're building a new city, you put street signs on corners, because people learned from other cities to look at street corners for street signs. In this case, luckily this isn't a navigation element or some sort of task-based necessity, but it is, however, a common element used in other sites..as you mention. So go to the prime directive, use a technique used elsewhere. The one you had when this first rolled out was fine IMO, but in any case find some small, neutral, non distracting, non-cutesy, loading graphic.

I'm not trying to stir the pot here -- just offering constructive thoughts to problem solve. Seems a lot of people have noticed a slowdown in game play, whether it's perceived or otherwise. These could be a couple of reasons why:
  • The spinner seems to be running until the page is fully loaded rather than Time to Interactive. This is why we can see the games ready to click on -- except that we can't click on them because the spinner is still running. If there is a way to set the spinner to TTI rather than full load, this might help.
  • The last thing that seems to load is the fade-in graphic in the Dispatches box. Cutting down on graphic size and eliminating the graphic effects could speed up the page load time, too.
Thanks for all your hard work, Sheriff and all!

I like this one without the goofy background. I found a plain one but can't find it any more...
This is simple...

The spinning Major Command banner is an overreach that really makes me dizzy to look at. It is definately uncomfortable, IMHO.

Yes, I hope they fix this, no need for the full page to load when you can click on your first game before it does.

Not sure what problem the animation solves, I can’t imagine before people weren’t sure if the page was loading or not.

Now it's spinning and never stopping, even though the page is fully loaded. Going to go and try to get into my active games again.

Very frustrating! I'm going to hold off on starting new games until this issue is fixed.

Nope. Restarted Chrome - still spinning. Tried in Firefox - still spinning.

Looks like I'm about to miss some turns.

Looking forward to it being removed hopefully. Really annoying, cheap looking, and does stay up longer than it should on the games list page… used to be able to click into a game even if the page wasn’t fully loaded, now have to wait… even if for just a few seconds longer.
