Lately I am seeing people stressing and in turn slowly killing themselves over map projects. They seem so complex and time consuming.

So here is a simple task that would probably be done very soon i would think - just to let your brain rest from all that hard work :D

Here are two Italy Maps - one which is a map of the whole country and its provinces:

and the other is the provinces with the counties:

Would it be possible to make a simple classic game play map with them (using the provinces as commands and the counties as regions)?

Hope you guys would relax your minds upon this small and simple project, and return to your on going projects with a fresh mind!

See i like the idea very much so.
My fav map is classic massive i think we should keep big world maps, provinces and countrys maybe breaking them down so lots of choice

the medieval map pack has some big maps, thats a work in progress still though. Italy may eventually make it here.

getting back to Italy, I'd like to see some discussion about the layout. The map in the first post showing the Provinces and Counties probably won't work, because the individual counties are pretty small and would be tricky to represent with enough room for troop containers. The map of Provinces only would leave us with just about 20 regions... while we could use another smallish map around here, I'm not sure Italy is the place for it.

Perhaps something historical? Any Italian Renaissance scholar out there?

I'm certainly not up on Italian history or geography, but if you need more regions, how about a few nested ones?

I found a few maps for the Great Italian Wars (1490s) , I am not sure but it might help? as these have different borders.

Italy Renaissance Map 1st Draft

Finally I got myself into drafting a map for the Renaissance of Italy. 15th Century.

Map Stats:
- # Regions - 42
- # Commands - 10

Special Feature:
The special feature for this map is "Major Cities". There are 12 regions around the map with a city icon. What I have in mind a "unification" objective (or Region Occupation), meaning when you hold all major cities you unify Italy and win the game. (this is the same code problem with the Middle East - hopefully we will find the fix for it on the weekend 24/3)

Bonuses:
They are not set and open for debate.

Thoughts? Any suggestion on how to make the lower half and upper half less linear?

A thought: a junction from Rome to Olbia and make Olbia or Alghero a "major city". Though neither would in fact be major cities, it is a strategic point of defense for Italy as a whole and should contribute to "unifying" the country. Plus, as of now those islands have little purpose.

The junction may not be a great idea, but I figure it would make sense historically. It would probably be of little use, but forces the holder of Rome to maintain Rome.

Your opinion on making the islands significant had given me a thought.

Leaving it as is, without a city, would make those parts of the map less significant, meaning that people will focus more on the mainland, and let the mainland have a higher strategical status. Reducing the bonuses down the bottom and up the top would also make it less appealing to take the bonuses on both ends of the map.

Edition v1.2

After a bit of consideration I had chucked numbers into the Bonus calculator that WidowMakers made, and came up with the bonus for commands.
A note on that is I am trying to minimize the importance of Sardinia in the time, therefore dropping it's bonus below other similarly sized commands.
Region shapes were slightly altered to fit names.

Map Stats:
# Regions: 42
# commands: 9 (two were combined from the previous version)
Special Feature: Region Occupation. Control all major cities (regions with city icons) to win.

How do you suggest then, to fit regions into the 1000x700 frame?

here is an upright version below which is trimmed and re-sized down to 1000x989
