Risk was invented by French film director Albert Lamorisse in the early 1950s. It was originally released in 1957 as La Conquête du Monde (The Conquest of the World) in France. It was later bought by Parker Brothers and released in 1959 with some modifications to the rules as Risk: The Continental Game, then as Risk: The Game of Global Domination.

My father-in-law grew up playing a similar board game called Diplomacy, which is basically risk except everyone is stepping away from the table and whispering and plotting and backstabbing the entire time. Which reminds me, I wonder if the Diplomacy tab is ever coming back?

Anyway, looks like it pre-dates Risk by a nose, released in 1954.

ah yes, i remember diplomacy. great game. though it took some time to undo the damage it did to the relationship i have with my sister in law

i really hope the diplo tab is coming back. it opens up so much more depth to these games.
on my personal list of things i wish that would work again this is high on #2 - right after points.
