I agree that it is a crappy situation for your team, but...
To me, settings are a choice made by the person setting up a game, and so is the decision to join the game when all settings are known.
I don't think the solution here is having Sheriff work his magic to modify settings. I think everyone involved knew or should have known the settings going in and chose to proceed.
I know I've both created and signed up for games, only to later realize the settings weren't what I thought they were. Sometimes I overcame the blunder; other times I had to suck it up and take the loss - and the lesson.
To me, it's not a feature thing; it's a choice thing.
