Sharing it with your friends on facebook is probably the best way to spread the news. If everyone did that, then the word would definitely get out.

Currently, I'm working on sending it to the players that have signed up to MajCom.

I can't think of much else....

OMG....Capt Sweatpants is GONE ??? I knew he was ill, but not THAT ill ... As I have been fighting my own cancer / surgery battle since a year ago April I have not been that active on MajCom due to multiple surgeries and procedures, edsdad can vouch for that ! I am signing up for the Kickstarter campaign as of the 1st of October. Since I'm retired I live on my Social Security pension right now. That means yes, I will be an Onyx member, but will take the 10 year membership reward. However, what MajCom has meant to me involves several of the players herein as personal friends, and Paul Farmer was one of those.

Count me in, folks !

A thought on the Kickstarter. (No doubt the powers that be will be way ahead of me, as usual, but just in case....)

Not sure how long into the appeal we are - a couple of weeks. But already well over half the target pledged. The question is - is 6k enough to do everything, or in an ideal world do you want more? And if you do want more, what would it be used for? (I know there's the CaptSweatpants donation and the pledge to match that to add to that total)

The way things are going the target of 6k could be reached well before the deadline. Somebody looking at the appeal as it stands might think: "Well they need 6k, and they've got that/ are going to get that - so what's the point in me pledging anything?"

I'm assuming that 6k would be good, but 10k/15k would be better - that we want to squeeze as much juice out of the appeal as possible. If that's the case, then would it be worth (as we approach the 6k target) being ready to amend/update the appeal to set out what could be achieved with additional funds over and above the 6k. It would be a bit of a shame if the appeal gets to 6k then peters out. It might be worth having an Update ready (when the time comes) to drop into the Appeal - right up the top - setting out what can be achieved with additional funding over-and-above the 6k target.

Maybe I'm counting my chickens before they're hatched - but I'm an optimist

Thank you legionbuck!

Yes, it took me by surprise too. I didn't even get the chance to tell him his check arrived safely. The post was slow and it showed up a week too late for me to pass on the message to him. So yes, that was quick for all of us.

However, you on the other hand, still use exclamation marks! So I'm confident you will be renewing your membership 10 years from now

I was quoted by someone that it would take about 20k. But they didn't look at the code, so it's not really a reliable estimate.

Of course the more the better, but this campaign is more to fulfill CaptSweatpants wish. He was hoping that his gift would be matched by the other players, so that is what we are doing now.... Actually, what he really wanted was for us to speed up the coding work, which is what we are starting to do at the moment.

Hopefully this Kickstarter campaign should also be enough to get us past the first hurdle.

If we could:
  • Move to a new server
  • create a seamless way to update the code without breaking the game
  • Stop the games from freezing (done)
  • Do some semi-major UI fixes
  • Implement the scoreboard
  • Implement email notifications
  • Implement medals and awards
Then I would consider that a success.

I'm not sure how much we will have in the bank after that, but any extra money would be for candy like:
  • Get Tournaments working
  • Add diplomacy
  • Add new maps
  • And add all the awesome features that we've been wanting for ages!
Oh yeah, and somewhere along the line, we need to implement membership again....

Several projects on Kickstarter get overfunded. I'm just trying to get to our goal. But I think all the players know that there isn't really a limit to what needs to be done. I mean, the improvements and features are endless.

Since we all (or almost all) play with special nickname's, can someone tell me where is the option in Kickstarter to add your Nickname so the PLedge is linked to your account?
Or does it work with the e-mail address?

When the kickstarter campaign if finished, then all donors will get an email asking for their player's name, so the rewards can be given out accordingly.

There is no option to provide your players name before the campaign is finished. :)

It is getting close I have never been more happy to contribute to something. I know that I was a way for a while, but it is great to be back. It is sad to learn about CaptSweatpants, but it is also great to see so many of the old players and all of the new players. I am also glad that points are not active, I am still a bit rusty. :)

Thanks! We're still campaigning, 'cause every dollar helps. :) But at least we now know that we made the base requirements!

And as everyone here knows, there is an endless list of awesome feature players want, so the job never ends! :)

When Field Marshal Rommel unleashed his Blitzkrieg attack upon us in the sands of North Africa, I was knocked unconscious and lost behind enemy lines. Upon regaining my senses, I found myself alone and without supplies. After enduring a few days of blazing desert heat, I was near death, but I continued to push on. Crawling over yet another dune, in an expanse of endless dunes, I thought my eyes were deceiving me... What did I see? A tropical Tiki bar nestled in under a grove of Palm trees! Surely this could not be! This HAD to be nothing more than a mirage! What was I to do? Option #1 was to crawl towards the mirage, which would obviously disappear just before I pulled myself up onto a bar stool. Option B would be to surrender my corpse to the vulture that had been tailing me for the last day, as he awaited his dinner. Hmmm.... I guess I might as well go for #1, and make Beaky the Buzzard wait a while longer.

I pushed with what little energy I had left, the hot sun sapping the last of my strength while Beaky seemed to be making his final preparations before mealtime. Nearing the Bar, I thought I could for sure smell the scent of limes, coconuts and pineapples - it even smelled like there was a suckling pig being spit roast over a fire! As far as mirages go, this must be one of the best ones ever. Finally, I reached out for the bar stool, and my hand grasped what actually felt like a seat. I pulled myself up and I was able to sit on it and look over the top of the bar. In a heavily Caribbean accent, the barkeep asked what I would be having. Naturally, my response was a Mojito, and it turned out to be the best Mojito I ever had.

Quark (the barkeep) had set up shop there to service the nomads and merchants that traveled the desert highway for generations. Since business had soured due to the war, he agreed to sell me his bar, and he would continue on his own way. I promptly renamed the place “Malpot’s Mojitios” the best non-mirage Tiki bar in the Sahara. While some may claim that I was AWOL for several years, I was able to obtain secret intelligence and pass it back to H.Q. along with some treasures stolen from the enemy. What was the biggest? A “5 Star General” and a “Map Name” that I procured from Kickstarter. “Malpot’s Mojitos” surrounded by palms, sure sounds like a great territory in the middle of a desert, doesn’t it?

So now that we are over-the-top on the Kickstarter, do the powers that be have any rough idea what sort of timescale we're likely to be looking at - from the appeal ending and the funds rolling in, until we get the site (scoreboard, tournaments, all that jazz) running properly again.

It's a bit too early to comment on any of that.
  • The campaign ends on Nov 14.
  • I'm not sure when the funds will be released.
  • We are currently in the process of looking for new help. So that's unknown as to when we will find the right person/people.
  • The Scoreboard/Tournaments are all related to when we can find new help.
  • However, there is nothing stopping us from running Tournaments manually for the Kickstarer backers. So that could happen not long after the campaign ends, and I gather everyone's information.

If you believe you tube videos and other parts of the internet on the history of the Mojito (or the non-sparkling water version the El Draque), it started with Sir Francis Drake and his 'exploration' of Cuba and the Caribbean in 1586.

Something like a small tropical island in the middle of the Caribbean (especially filled with pirates) would seem to be a very appropriate location, if I am catching your drift...

I would happily coach someone! I offer specialist tutorials in how to stifle groans at failed eliminations and 4 cardsnoset. Also in how to cheerfully complain to other Eeyores such as as Engelbrekt. There may be other skills I could coach people in but they slip my mind after these months of mc starvation.
I could offer expert coaching along this vein also; specifically I have a course that I would be willing to teach entitled "Bitch and Win". One of my favorite long-term strategies. :)
